It's time to take you through my bucket list trip to Peru. Organized by my trusted World Treks, this two-week, nine-flight adventure - which took two days to get there and two days to return - was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a dream come true. Nestled in the stunning landscapes of South America, Peru offers visitors rich history, culture, and natural beauty. From the majestic peaks of the Andes to the lush depths of the Amazon rainforest, every corner of this diverse country offers a new adventure waiting to be discovered.
Peru has always been a dream destination for me and having the opportunity for exploration and discovery in its ancient ruins, vibrant cities, and enchanting landscapes can't be covered in one blog post. Therefore, I'm preparing a series of blog posts, in which I will be sharing my adventures across Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the 4-day Inca Trail, and the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. Let's start with my unforgettable journey in Lima.
Lima, the vibrant Peruvian capital, is not only the largest city in Peru but also one of the largest in South America. Bursting with life and energy, Lima is situated on the central coast of Peru and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Lima offers a captivating blend of history and culture, making it an essential stop for any traveller seeking to discover the soul of Peru.
Lima combines the old and the new, blending history with modernity. It's called the City of Kings, and when you stroll through its streets, you'll see why. Colonial-era buildings stand tall beside modern skyscrapers. Lima is home to many architectural wonders, including historic churches and cathedrals with impressive facades, detailed designs and carvings. Each building has a story to tell, about battles fought, cultures mixing, and artists expressing themselves.
Since my time in Lima was limited, I took the opportunity to be part of a half-day tour, which allowed me to explore some of the highlights of this vibrant city, delve into its history, and uncover some majestic locations.
San Francisco de Lima
Visiting San Francisco de Lima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is like stepping into a living testament of Lima's rich cultural heritage. This historic complex, dating back to the colonial era, is a treasure trove of architectural marvels and artistic wonders. As you wander through its grand halls and ornate courtyards, you'll be transported back in time, immersing yourself in the splendour of centuries past. The magnificent basilica and convent, adorned with intricate carvings and stunning frescoes, stand as a testament to the craftsmanship of generations. Exploring San Francisco de Lima is not just a journey through history; it's an opportunity to connect with the history of the city and uncover the stories of its vibrant past.
Main Square of Lima
The Main Square of Lima stands as a symbol of the city's grand history and architectural beauty, surrounded by stunning buildings that showcase its rich heritage. The Government Palace, with its iconic Peruvian flag waving proudly, serves as a reminder of colonial grandeur. Nearby, the elegance of the Archbishop's Palace with its impressive facade, reflects centuries of tradition and authority. At the heart of the square, the Lima Cathedral, with its blend of Gothic and Baroque styles, captivates visitors with its intricate details. Each of these buildings carries stories of conquest and cultural exchange, serving as symbols of Lima's remarkable legacy.
Parque Metropolitano de la Muralla
The Parque Metropolitano de la Muralla, surrounding the ancient walls of the city, is not only a serene green oasis but also a treasure trove of archaeological wonders. Within its boundaries lie remnants of ancient civilizations, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the city's rich history. Wander through the park, and you'll encounter well-preserved archaeological sites, including remnants of colonial-era structures and pre-Columbian ruins. These sites tell stories of the civilizations that once thrived in Lima, showcasing their architectural skills and cultural traditions. From ancient Inca settlements to Spanish colonial buildings, the Parque Metropolitano de la Muralla provides a unique opportunity to explore the history that has shaped the city over centuries, making your visit an unforgettable experience.
The Balconies of Lima
Lima's balconies serve as reminders of the city's cultural heritage and colonial legacy. Decorating the fronts of numerous historic buildings, these finely crafted wooden additions provide insight into Lima's Spanish influence and European sophistication. Originally, these balconies were created to accommodate the traditional Spanish custom of "miradores," or people-watching, allowing residents to observe street life and socialize from the comfort of their homes. Each balcony features detailed designs and decorative patterns, reflecting the skilled craftsmanship of past generations. As you explore Lima's streets, take a moment to look up and appreciate these masterpieces, which embellish the city.
Huaca Pucllana site
This pre-Inca archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Lima culture, who inhabited the region over a thousand years ago. Explore the adobe pyramid, marvelling at its precise architecture and design. As you wander through the site, you'll discover stories about ancient rituals, religious ceremonies, and daily life in this old city. It's like taking a trip back in time and learning about Peru's rich history and the people who lived here long ago.
Miraflores Kennedy Park (Park of Love)
Known as the Park of Love, nestled in the green surroundings of Miraflores, it offers a peaceful sanctuary with its well-kept lawns, vibrant flowers, and breathtaking views of the ocean. Wander along its pathways, pausing to appreciate the view and the romantic gazebos scattered throughout the park. One notable attraction is the iconic statue "El Beso" (The Kiss), which depicts a couple wrapped in each other’s arms, symbolizing love and unity. Another unique aspect of Kennedy Park is the tradition of leaving locks with messages of love and friendship, symbolizing everlasting bonds. This park is a beloved destination for both locals and tourists to unwind and enjoy the tranquillity of Lima's coastal setting.
Barranco: The Bridge of Sighs
Crossing Barranco's iconic Bridge of Sighs is like stepping into the romantic heart of Lima's bohemian neighborhood. As you stroll across this historic bridge and the picturesque streets below, you can't help but sense a longing for a past era of secret lovers and secret meetings. The bridge got its name from tales of lovers sighing as they passed over.
Pisco Tasting
One of the must-try experiences is tasting Pisco, the national spirit of Peru. Enjoy the flavours of this iconic drink, which is infused in tradition and history. Whether you prefer it in a classic Pisco Sour or in a refreshing Chilcano, each sip is a celebration of Peru's cultural heritage. As you raise your glass in Lima, tasting Pisco is not just a drink—it's an invitation to immerse yourself in the spirit of Peru.
As my day in Lima drew to a close, I reflected on the unforgettable experiences I had. Each moment left a permanent mark on my journey through this enchanting city. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty, Lima has truly enriched my travel experience. As I conclude my time in Lima, I eagerly anticipate the adventures that await me in the days to come.
